2021-2022 Innovative Learning Grant Recipients

Thank you to our donors who benefit our teachers and educational community! REFI has awarded $36,684 in classroom grants for the 2021-2022 school year. These grants support elementary, middle and high school classrooms throughout RCPS. REFI’s grant program financially supports creative and innovative curricular development that is beyond the scope of the typical school budget. The creativity and caring nature of each one of these proposals, supports the evidence that RCPS teachers are willing go above and beyond their educational calling to encourage their students to learn, have fun and become caring individuals. 

Innovative Learning Grants Funded for Elementary Schools 

Community Science/Agriculture Days REFI Grant $1800
Douglas Heishman, Tammy May, Shelley Garrison, April Soltis, Katy Zebrowski, and Kori Mayhugh - Cub Run Elementary School, Lacey Springs Elementary School, Spotswood High School, and Broadway High School
Abstract:  This project will be a hands-on experience, with students interacting with all types of agricultural investigations that will include stations that students choose because of interest in the topic based on their research. This is a collaboration between four schools and Valley View Farms to create an amazing learning experience.
 
Putting the Fun Into FUNdamentals REFI Grant $448
Linda Hirw - Cub Run Elementary School
Abstract:  This project will create resources for teachers during this turbulent year of LETRS training, both by taking LETRS drills and "gameifying" them and by creating engaging resources for assistants to use with children while their teachers attend LETRS training.
 
We Need More to Tinker, Build and Explore! REFI Grant $216
Anita Ritchie - Fulks Run Elementary School
Abstract:  This project will create a makerspace area that will allow students to be critical thinkers as they problem solve and think outside the box.  Makerspaces provide a safe place for students to fail, and then learn by trial and error as they construct and create.
 
Social Emotional Learning Buddies REFI Grant $825
Heather Kolvoord and Lori Pillichody- John Wayland Elementary School
Abstract:  Social Emotional learning and development. We will use the Feelings Buddies Curriculum and materials to role play in the classroom to help students learn skills to cope with big emotions and interact with peers appropriately.
 
Cooperating, Calculating, Collaborating, and Cooking in the Classroom REFI Grant $650
Melanie Bair and Jessie Everett - John Wayland Elementary School
Abstract:  Using cooking to collaborate and learn with peers in the classroom.  We will use cooking items to promote hands-on experiences in our classrooms. While cooking in the classroom, students will get experience with following directions, reading, collaborating, measuring/number sense, counting, building vocabulary and understanding around cooking being science in action.
 
Heating and Cooling - The Natural Way REFI Grant $235
Tammy May - Lacey Spring Elementary School
Abstract:  The sun's natural rays not only provide beauty and warmth for people to enjoy, but they also generate benefits for the world in which we live. Solar's power helps to generate energy for lighting, heating, and cooling. Elementary students need to embrace this as the future caretakers of our land.
 
Follow the "Green Valley Road" to Literacy REFI Grant $360
Therese Warner - McGaheysville Elementary School
Abstract: Instilling a love of reading in my students and their families is an ever-challenging task.  This grant will enable students to choose books from the Green Valley Book Fair to help them continue their “Road to Literacy”.
 
Ag-venture REFI Grant $345
Autumn Pequignot - Mountain View Elementary School
Abstract: “An industry that feeds you is an industry worth fighting for.”  Local farmers, producers, agriculture enthusiasts, and educators collaborate in a curriculum-based hands-on opportunity. This event will educate us about how our food gets to the table. This project meets all division learning objectives (5 C’s).
 
Song Tales - A Musical Storytelling Project REFI Grant $1956
Jo Enke, Greg Conway and Carolyn Payne – Fulks Run Elementary School and Mountain View Elementary School
Abstract:  This grant will fund musical instruments and character-building trade books that will be used by students to create song tales. Students will create these musical stories and will collaborate with students from a partner school within our county. Students will discuss citizenship, and learn musical composition in this project.
 
A VA Native American Project: The Traveling Trunk REFI Grant $430
Jo Enke – Fulks Run Elementary School and Mountain View Elementary
Abstract:  This grant will provide materials for a traveling trunk containing lesson plans, games, books and instruments to teach about local (Virginia) Native American tribes. This project will be a sister project to an Arts Council of the Valley Grant. This trunk will be available to loan at RCPS teachers' request.
 
OES Alphabet Book - REFI Grant $106
Dezirae Brubaker and Bethany Deputy - Ottobine Elementary
Abstract: “OES Alphabet Book” is a book created by the PreK students at Ottobine Elementary School. This book will challenge the students to enhance their alphabetic knowledge by having them demonstrate their beginning word sound knowledge. Each student will get a copy of the book to continuously practice their alphabet knowledge.
 
 Enhancing Literacy Through Nonfiction REFI Grant $540
Dezirae Brubaker - Ottobine Elementary
Abstract:  "Enhancing Literacy Through Nonfiction" will allow the library at Ottobine Elementary School to gain more books in the library for circulation for students and teachers. These books will be used to support independent inquiry and the curriculum. Nonfiction books are of high interest amongst students at OES and are in high demand.
 
Strategic and Educational Games John H. Kidd Honor Grant for Math $400
Michael Wampole - Peak View Elementary School
Abstract:  This project will create an environment that challenges students to problem solve, cooperate with each other, and apply real world skills of logic, math, and reasoning. Math will be the main focus of these activities.
 
Ancient Market Craze REFI Grant $331
Mary Harter, Jenny Turner, and Rebecca Rogers - Peak View Elementary School
Abstract:  We will review the five ancient civilizations studied in third grade. Along with review, students will create an art product to represent each country. These products will be available for "sale" to the whole grade level in an Ancient Market in the library for fun economics practice and review.
 
Animal World Investigations REFI Grant $1816
Margo Jantzi and Hataw Taha – Pleasant Valley Elementary School
Abstract:  Students will use inquiry skills to research ecosystems of various animals. Zoom conversations with a university professor will build background knowledge. Students will investigate science topics in a purposeful and creative way. They will create interactive habitats and green screen videos to show what they know.
 
Put Me In A Book!  REFI Grant $250
Amber Depoy, Marsha Hinkle, and Bethany Deputy - Plains Elementary School
Abstract:  Through this project, RCPS's youngest learners will have the opportunity to engage in the process of bookmaking - from start to finish. Students will collaborate to plan, execute, and publish a book in which they are all a character. Each student will be presented with this keepsake upon completion.
  
Out of this World STEM Day REFI Grant $300
Wes Smith - Plains Elementary School
Abstract:  Space is a vast landscape that has the interest of students. Students are interested in activities that relate to real-world scenarios. Why not put them together and have a space themed STEM day at school? This grant will allow students to explore space through hands-on STEM activities.
 
Native American Day REFI Grant $250
Karen Komara, Melissa Fox, and Krista Miller - Pleasant Valley Elementary School
Abstract:  The goal of the Native American Day will be for 40 fourth graders to identify and describe life in America before the 17th century. Students in fourth grade will convert classrooms into Indian Villages. Students will eat authentic food, dress, design 3-D homes, and make crafts specifically representing their tribe.
 
RBES Garden Club REFI Grant $1100
Lydia Mix and Kelly Dove - River Bend Elementary School
Abstract:  This project will create a school wide garden that would include flowers, vegetables, and a sensory garden section. All school students would be responsible for parts of the garden. The ultimate goal: for students to gain a passion and/or respect for farming/gardening. And have the beginning skills to grow their own food.
 
Wild Rock REFI Grant $5000
Kim Muraskin and Tamara Kratz – All RCPS Elementary Schools
Abstract:  It has been well documented that free play in schoolyard green spaces improves children’s academic performance and social emotional well-being. This program will prepare elementary school counselors in east side elementary schools to lead school-wide outdoor play initiatives and equip them with quality play materials to be used by all students, including those with special needs.
  
CSI STEM for Budding Forensic Scientists REFI Grant $699
April Soltis – Cub Run Elementary School and South River Elementary School
Abstract:  Students will benefit from applied scientific principles of the scientific method using forensic science detective kits. Students will examine and analyze forensic evidence to solve mysteries and delve into the world of exploration of current careers in science and math. Lessons have students investigate crime scenes and explore genetics.
 
Hooking Bookworms at the River 
Nancy Mast Honor Grant for Early Literacy $900
April Soltis and Amanda Lingenfelter - South River Elementary School
Abstract:  Children learn to read by reading. The more books to which a child is exposed, the more likely a child is to experience success and build confidence. A computer program doesn’t substitute for teachers delving into a bookroom, choosing books that engage particular students and providing vehicles for deeper learning! A bookroom’s primary purpose is to supply books to classroom libraries. The bookroom is a shared instructional resource that provides teachers with a greater range of books for their readers and for their instructional goals. It is the perfect complement to a vibrant school and classroom library.

Innovative Learning  Grants Funded for Middle Schools

A "Novel" Approach to Reading: Graphic Novels REFI Grant $970
Jessica Kitta - Elkton Middle School
Abstract:  Expanding the library’s collection of graphic novels is a “novel” approach to literacy. Graphic novels will support the Rockingham County vision of creating a “community of readers,” by providing students, especially struggling readers, with diverse reading materials, which can help them become lifelong readers.
 
Block Out Poetry: Combining Visual Art with Language Arts REFI Grant $810
Tracy West and Jessica Kitta - Elkton Middle School
Abstract:  8th Grade Art students will be able to create original poems by recycling old book pages. Students will be able to create original artwork overlaying the page to illustrate their poems. Library students who are not in art class may also have the opportunity to do this project.
 
Pictures Speak A Thousand Words- Broadening Our Graphic Novel Collection REFI Grant $1000
Mary Sonifrank and Molly Highland - J. Frank Hillyard Middle School
Abstract:  On average, our students are more than two grade levels behind in reading. Graphic novels however not only engage students but also make texts far more accessible for struggling and EL readers. This project will expand the library’s graphic novel collection to ensure all students can access books of interest.
 
Modernizing Today's Musician REFI Grant $1000
Kimberly Mumbauer and Melissa Harper - Wilber S. Pence Middle School
Abstract:  The musicians of today are growing and changing in many ways. To help provide for and encourage the “Modern Musician,” this grant will be used to purchase “Modern Band” instruments (keyboards, basses, ukuleles etc.) to be used in our music classrooms.
 
Spanish Buddies REFI Grant $918
Abby Huffman and Lanna Higgs - Wilber S. Pence Middle School and Mountain View Elementary School
Abstract:  The "Spanish Buddies" program is designed to give Kindergarteners the opportunity to learn Spanish, and to develop middle school students’ leadership skills. In this program a Kindergarten class will receive Spanish instruction once a week co-taught by a middle school Spanish teacher and middle school students currently studying Spanish.
 
Spice Up My Bookshelf! REFI Grant $347
Abby Huffman - Wilber S. Pence Middle School
Abstract:  The goal of this initiative is to provide middle school students with books to deepen their learning and broaden their horizons. This grant will provide a variety of quality books to choose from that satisfy students’ diverse interests while broadening their understanding of Hispanic cultures.

Innovative Learning Grants Funded for High Schools 

Aquaponics in the Classroom Carol Smith Fenn Honor Grant $715
Janae Pettit - Broadway High School
Abstract: This project will allow the BHS Ag Department to turn their existing fish tank into an aquaponics system that sustainably produces two food products, leafy greens and fish. This project will be led and designed by the student in the second level of Ecology & Natural Resources.
 
The Ancient Craft of Papermaking and Bookbinding REFI Grant $689
Brandy Somers - Broadway High School
Abstract:  Students will study the ancient craft of Papermaking and its relationship to Bookmaking. They’ll learn the history of papermaking, its beginnings in China (105AD), collect and study native wildflowers/plants on school campus, create sheets of paper incorporating their finds, then use those sheets of paper in a book-binding project.
 
Fashion Design REFI Grant - $1000
Mallory Cromer - Broadway High School
Abstract:  Students are opening, refurbishing, rebranding the BHS school store. As part of this process, students will be conducting marketing research, determining a target market, and designing apparel for students, faculty & staff, and community members. The funds for this project would go towards purchasing transfers to go on apparel, mugs, etc.
 
Drone Technology REFI Grant - $1500
Oleg Sych and David McCarthy - East Rockingham High School and Elkton Middle School
Abstract:  This grant will introduce a variety of Drones into our classrooms and will enhance student interaction with modern technology and provide them another avenue of creating content for the school and for their projects.
 
"Resource"ful Tools REFI Grant $550
Janeen Dofflemyer and Barbara Eanes - East Rockingham High School
Abstract:  Special education teachers work hard to ensure that their students with disabilities grow socially and academically during the school year. While effective teaching strategies and building positive relationships will always be the priority, having the right “tools'' available to assist with the students’ accommodations is also of vital importance. The “Resource”ful Tools grant would allow special teachers to purchase items such as personal daily planners/agendas, earbuds, reusable water bottles, large button calculators, Chromebook chargers and a subscription to the high interest/low vocabulary CHOICES magazine. Teachers will then use and/or distribute these items to students in the privacy of the resource classroom.
 
Puzzle Pause Time!  REFI Grant $250
Janeen Dofflemyer, Ellen Whetzel, and Jennifer Jones - East Rockingham High School
Abstract:  As adults, we are encouraged to dedicate a portion of our day to quiet, reflective time. Research indicates that time of reflection, meditation or relaxation are crucial to a healthy lifestyle. This grant will provide special education students with opportunities to disconnect from their personal, and school required, technology in order to spend time working on puzzles, coloring oversized posters, or playing traditional board games with teachers or classmates.
 
Teaching Lifetime Activity through Disc Golf REFI Grant $1000
Danielle Werner, Matt Rhea, Jordan hardy, Janeen Dofflemyer and Mark Palmer - East Rockingham High School
Abstract:  Teaching students about lifetime activities in physical education can give them the knowledge and skills they need to lead a healthy lifestyle. Disc golf is a lifetime activity that we would like to implement into our curriculum because of the mental and physical health benefits it could provide our students.
 
Silly Spanish - For Big Kids!  REFI Grant $800
Kate McDonald - East Rockingham High School
Abstract:  Learning a second language should happen as naturally and organically as learning the first. I will use props, costumes and level appropriate readers to inspire more language learners to feel confident in their abilities. Props, costumes and books make stories - and by extension, vocabulary - more memorable.

School Embroidery Business REFI Grant $1000
Bridgett Smith - Spotswood High School
Abstract:  This grant will allow the start of an embroidery "business" through the FCS dept. at Spotswood High School. Embroidered caps would be one of our main projects, but we are in need of a hat hoop set to be able to embroider them. We already have the embroidery machine and other materials.
 
Express Yourself: Student Recording Studio REFI Grant $1000
Tim Mumbauer, Patty Evans, and Rob Nash - Turner Ashby High School
Abstract:  High School students traverse a seemingly endless road to find their voice.  Many do this through vocal music, spoken verse, comedy and instrumental music. Adding recording and mixing equipment to our library will provide an opportunity for students to record, remix, and distribute their own creative and academic works.
 
The Sky's the Limit REFI Grant $980
Laura Whittaker, Kirsten Redifer, Josh Eye, and Katie Long - Turner Ashby High School and John Wayland Elementary School
Abstract:  The Sky’s the Limit is a collaborative project between high school astronomy students and fourth grade elementary students. The project begins with the high school students creating and teaching astronomy lessons to the fourth graders and culminates in the construction and launch of model rockets. Let the excitement soar.

Abstract:  The RCPS Instructional Technology staff will complete an Augmented Reality Sandbox that will serve the East Rockingham and Spotswood attendance areas.
 
Farmville Tour Guides: A Student Led Field Experience REFI Grant $993
Beau Dickenson and Owen Longacre - Central Office
Abstract:  The Farmville Tour Guides Project is an immersive learning experience that challenges participants to research a chapter of Virginia's civil rights history in preparation for a student-led tour of Farmville, Virginia.
 
Exploring Technical Programs Dr. Charlette McQuilkin Honor Grant $940
Faith Hottle - Central Office
Abstract:  Special education students often have limitations with regards to workplace readiness skills, technical skills, and adequate job seeking skills. They need to experience a specific, focused, and intentional activity that will provide a meaningful, tangible look at a pathway to employment. Technical training will help increase the likelihood of employment.
