We are excited to share that REFI CARES (Community Assistance and Resources Empowering Students) has officially launched our extended Giving Tuesday campaign to support Care Closets across RCPS. Care Closets provide essential hygiene items and basic necessities for students who need them, ensuring that every child has the foundation required to learn with confidence.

This year, we are thrilled to announce that the Monica Pence Barlow Endowment (Monica's Gift) has generously offered to match all donations to REFI CARES up to $4,000 now through December 12.

​Monica, the daughter of Rev. Wayne and Dr. Ramona Pence (former RCPS administrator) and wife of Ben Barlow, graduated from Spotswood High School and William and Mary College. She was the Public Relations Director for the Baltimore Orioles baseball team. Monica died in 2014 from non-smoking non-small-cell lung cancer at the age of 36. This match doubles the impact of every contribution and helps us expand support to even more students. What is a Care Closet and why do students need it?

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs reminds us that students must have their basic physiological and safety needs met before they can focus on academics, build confidence, or reach their full potential. By strengthening our Care Closets, we are helping ensure these foundational needs are met so students can thrive.
